Just Remember

For Edward

I remember your eyes:
filled with the pain of your story,
the acceptance of mine,
and the moon-
mirrored in your pupils.

We sat under a starry sky
on that chilly night,
overlooking the city
while we bared our souls
and we had been enough.

That intoxicating night
bound us like sand and glue-
twisting my heart
into the shape of a
painful bloom.

That,
I remember.

I'll always remember.

Because,
though you are gone-
now only wisps of memory
and the warmth in my smile-
you are still there with me:

Each and every night,
in view of the city,
under each star in the sky,
and in the chill of night,
when I tell the moon

to remember.

Just remember.

This is one of the best poems I’ve read all day & I’ve been reading all day. I love the way you tell a story with vivid details, both in sensory imagery & also in conveying feelings. I love the pacing – you take your time explaining each twist & turn of this story, until it finally comes to an ending that’s such a heartfelt tribute. Some people we meet are not meant to stay in our lives for long, that I’ve learned in my long life of 61 years. This poem is the most perfect & healthy way to accept that reality. I have a best friend who died 4 years ago & I never met him in person (both too disabled & on opposite coasts, separated by 4000 miles). This poem describes perfectly the feelings of grace & acceptance I’ve finally learned to have, regarding this loss. Thank you for saying it so beautifully! (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

No, thank you. This means a lot. I lost Edward 12 years ago during a time where we were not talking and I just now have begun to feel a sense of peace about it. I like to think he had a hand in it as he was in every dream I had for almost two weeks straight before I wrote this. It never gets better but it does get easier to feel it I think.
