Your Eyes Met Mine

Your Eyes Met Mine

A Poem by David McNeeley

Melanie Johnson
I know you thought me odd
With the way I stared and said you remind me of my mom
But the images You remind me of were old faded
Of days when she was young and a bit less jaded

So as I stared I thought of possibilities and love
Of how maybe, even though it may sound kinky, we could make love
Of how you would learn that my heart is one that is true
And when others leave, never will I, You.

I wish that I was more confident
I wish I that people knew what I meant
When I said that I want a girl as a friend
And then when every other avenue is spent a lover until time's end

You made me smile today
And my heart stood still
As I gazed upon the image of you and realized you live here still
In this the frozen homeland of people I once called home

There are many things you don't know
Things about me
And you
Things that can wait, but will without fear be revealed

Let me know what it is you want
Do wish for love to take you body, mind, and soul
Or befriend your heart and listen to your troubled soul
Are you patient enough to see what it is we can be

I know our love is unlikely
And fate has only made our threads to run parallel to this end
I wish I knew the pattern of this tapestry
And that what I do will be worth it in the end

My friend should I pursue and entwine with the strand you call your own
Or do we part and leave it here alone
Did my affection go unnoticed and find no kin
Or did your heart leap as mine when your eyes met mine

I saw the photograph of a girl I liked and used to work with in a job I hated but with people I enjoyed and loved. I saw it at the Brophy building on the Viterbo campus on the opposite side of town from where the old job was. I live about 2 and a half blocks from Viterbo and this was my first building working for the cleaning company that now employs me. I enjoy cleaning far more than customer service. I am a people person in that I enjoy being around and with people. I like to listen to their stories and hear what they have to say. I enjoyed that part of the Customer Service position, but there were certain elements that required dishonesty and lack of interest in the actual needs and desires of the customers. I cannot flourish in an environment where I'm not actually helping someone. Needless to say I enjoyed the people but disliked the job. Melanie was one of the people who made it worth staying as she was part of my training group and the reasons stated in this poem. The point is I saw an picture of her on a board with others who appeared to work or at least intern in the Brophy building and it stirred up nostalgia that I had to put to words. I enjoyed writing this piece and any criticisms/corrections would be appreciated.
