Is Wrath Love?

Is Wrath Love?

A Poem by Jason Ellis

Wipe my eyes as I pray
my words turn to water
as water turned to wine
and mother to daughter
and spoke of the good book;
God, her alma mater
who tutored her in love
and bade men to slaughter

Just stay busy talking
and let Him go unheard
I’ll get to say I tried
but nothing ever stirred
my soul into action
even the Holy word
which I found sets you free
like clipped wings on a bird

Shadows hang upon me,
screaming wraiths in the night
who creep from dark places
which never see the light
of the mid-morning sun
that shines as if to spite
the dusk that I harbor
and the sins that I write

Is it He who stands there
wreathed in supernal flame,
chaos all around me
as He roars out my name?
His ire is His love,
they are one and the same.
If that's the heart of God,
who am I to feel shame?
