Decay of Love

have you
ever wondered
    what heartbreak was about?
an action
so simple
    can make you feel lower
    than the last kid picked
    for kickball,
or realizing
you’ve left
    your wallet at home
    with groceries left on the line.

just because two people don’t agree
and no one else in the world can see,

“doesn’t mean love’s a grave;
it won’t decay on you.”

for so long I was afraid to fall in love, never realizing the real fear should have been for what comes after.
