The Heart I Found

The Heart I Found

A Poem by Travis Gibson (poetic heroics)

shattered to pieces

it was---

sprawled across a dismal place

is where i found it...

a place like nothing

i've ever seen

soon i discovered

as i gazed at the burning sands

and the burnt leafless trees, that

this was the place

where hearts that were onced loved

come to die...

so, rescued it

i did---

i whisked the pieces

to where the wind blows soft

and the sun's light remains a constant

i laid it down softly

in the whispering grass

next to the river of honey,

that went on for miles...

i crumbled to my knees

as i stared at what to the right of me

was an abandoned gift---

i bought my handsin close together

as i dipped them into the river,

crossing my fingers

to make certain that not a drop

spilled from my hands

i splashed it gently

with the river's sweetness,

with great hopes to revive it

from it's emotional comatose

but, unmoved it remained

i began to grow doubtful

as i glanced at the cracked clouded-heart

that laid still in the grass,

just beside me...

i could do nothing but cry

as feelings of failure overcame me

i stared blankly

at the moiste saturated grass

where my tears had fallen...

i slowly ran my fingers

across it's rigid surface

because a part of me believed,

stll believed... in love

i grasped the shattered heart firmly

and held it close to my chest

as i chose to dedicate to it

one pure act of selflessness...

tightly i held it---

i breathed deeply

as i stood to my feet,

i kissed at the sun one last time

then, surrenderingly...

i leapt into the river,

panic never met me

as we where consumed

by it's majestic power,

nor did i loosen my grip

calm i remained---

as it's currents effortlessly tossed us about

for i had decided

to express to the heart,

the impulse of love, one last time

by letting the river,

letting fate...

decide our outcome

i wanted it to see

all that i am willing to do,

all that i am willing to lose...

and all that i am willing to give---

because, i didn't pludge into the river

to prove i was willing to die for it

but willing and ready to live for it

i jumped into the river

with the intent to survive,

and live life anew...

now, i was challenging the heart

to want the same

finally, we were swept to the river's bank---

with heart still in hand

i opened my eyes with amazement

as i witnessed the cracks

beginning to disappear

and the clouds starting to break...

revealing the calming light it held inside

and as the images within became clear,

i realized... the heart i found---

belonged to the one i loved
