Intended No Harm

Intended No Harm

A Poem by Holly Mason

The girl has bad,old, torn,shoes.
She approaches the counter slowly.
She is nervous asking for help.
The lady behind her clears her throat.
The girl stiffens.
The lady behind her sniffles.
The girl asks for a small job, anything will do.
The lady behind her taps her foot.
The girl shifts from old shoe to old shoe.
The lady once again clears her throat.
The girl opens her mouth but just stammers.
She turns around and bumps into the lady.
The lady has a look of disgust.
The girl feels and sees it.
The girl with the torn shoes runs for the door.
The lady watches.
The lady approaches the counter.
The lady is smiling...I intended no harm, but really
go to the food pantry.
The counter lady agrees.
The girl has another hungry night with torn shoes.
With no intended harm as their excuse.

Holly, we have experienced, what you have so eloquently written here, at various times, in our lives. Personally, the inbetween time, when I didn't passed as a woman, the looks could drill a hole through the thickest of steel plates. Scaring a fragile soul, to the core.

Your welcome.
Yes, how many dismissive looks are thrown her way in a single day? How hard was i for her to ask? and how was she treated? Sadly, she won't be the only one.
Wonderful words Holly

Yeah, it isn't easy being green :-)
i really like this...we do so much harm without actually intending to.
is it because we just don't think about what we say or do?

i think so..we are often so unaware.

Very nice. Well structured, with a nicely timed meter. Most poetry seems to be a projection of our emotions with no real 'story'. It is a complicated task to weave a narrative, but make it clear that YOUR emotions resonate in the words. I enjoyed this immensely.
