Jump Rope

Jump Rope

A Poem by Holly Mason

The little girl in a wayward dress
jumping shamelessly, hair a mess
what becomes of training in the sun
a world athlete, the sheer power of one
she jumps, she glistens in the hot afternoon
not knowing we watch for a hero to bloom
jump,jump,jump...for those who hold the ropes
a quickened pace can and will she cope
she jumps harder, faster then ever before
spinning the crowd with an energy core
she is spinning now out on the ice
no wayward dress a custom costume so nice
skates are down ,arms gracefully held high
reaching the stars, touching the skies
gold for her efforts containing a dream
a quest  of nostalgia creating a theme
jumping a rope found beside of the road
led us to watch a leader unfold
jump,jump,jump,...for those who hold the rope
leads to gold, when a girl has strength to cope

Love the action in this piece, Holly. Your poem brings a touch of nostalgia, and makes me want to find a rope to jump with... Love the "strong girl" message, too. Nice write!

Thanks for your words about "A Watched Pot"....I wrote it in about a minute while waiting for water to boil for tea !

As a school teacher, a few of your poems resonate with me, among them this one - an image familiar to me on recess duty ! I love your intermingling of lots of alliterative four-letter words.

I glean from your work that you are a mother. "Jump Rope" brought to mind a poem by Myesha Jenkins that you might appreciate, called "My Sweet Girl".

I am enjoying reading your other poems, too. All best.
