Five Steps

Five Steps

A Poem by Hannah

The first step is the hardest

You can feel your heart beat

And your eyes start to water

Your hands become fists

And your nails leave marks

On your pink tinged palms

The second step is easier

Your calves become cold

From the blue rolling waves

Your toes sink deep

Into the sand beneath the water

And you welcome the cold

The third step comes with questions

Your life plays in your head

Like a movie with yourself

As the main character

You yearn to remake the movie

And take away the moment it went wrong

The fourth step is cold

The water caresses your waist

And your fists loosen

And become flat against your stomach

But you don’t shiver from the cold

You shiver from the regret

The fifth step is welcoming

The water is up to your neck

And the movie is coming to an end

You no longer feel regret

You welcome the hands of the waves

And sink under for the last time
