Scales

Scales

A Poem by Hayden Ferguson
"

Even being a pet fish has it's own privileges.

"

Have you ever looked at your pet fish,

And wonder if they ever wish?

Do they ever dwell in deep thought,

Or ever feel distraught?

Can they feel love,

Or even sense of a power from above?

In reality fish do not quaver to any of these,

Or are able to shiver in the northern breeze.

These fish are protected inside of their high walls of crystal,

While some of us seek the warmth from a pistol.

Their body is covered in scales from head to fin,

While we are protected by paper-thin skin,

There are masses of fish who all wear the same face,

While we believe others are different based on race.

I am just sitting here blowing gallons of smoke,

While my Discus is looking at me as a joke.

We like to keep these creatures harbored in a bowl,

And think we know who plays the better role.

That we are the free,

And they are trapped inside of our man-made sea.

To be sentenced to a cell rid of sin,

And we continue to struggle to grin.

So now I sit while my thoughts strangle me,

And wonder which side of the glass I would rather be.

This was very well written and conveyed and described the settings and emotions of the fish. It goes in and out of perspectives but its artfully done. Your rhymes are solid and melodic. Excellent work!!
