The Farm Bill was enacted into law in 2018, making hemp legal in the United States. However, with this huge stride forward came a lot of misunderstanding for the best CBD treats for pets everywhere.

The Farm Bill eventually legalized hemp, but also made the crop heavily regulated both for personal and industrial production, which means that regulations governing hemp-derived products, such as CBD, are not so clear.

And, while the new bill permitted and safeguarded hemp study in people, it did not apply to veterinary situations. In other words, cannabis and CBD for dogs are in a legal limbo: they are legal but not approved for your best friend.

So the question stays unanswered. Do veterinarians advocate CBD? Let's get started...

Why can’t vets recommend or prescribe CBD for pets?

As of July 2021, 36 states had legalized marijuana for either medical or recreational purposes"or both. Nonetheless, none of these rules address the use of cannabis in veterinary treatment.

As a result, while the hemp business is thriving and stores are brimming with supplements for animals and people, most veterinarians are unable to discuss cannabis and CBD with their patients.

States with more established cannabis economies, like as California and Nevada, are less stringent in their veterinarian regulations. In fact, a measure enacted in May 2021 will go into effect on October 1, 2021, making Nevada the first state in the United States where veterinarians can suggest and give CBD to patients without fear of disciplinary action if the products contain no more than 0.3 percent THC.

According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, prior to this legislation:

"California [was] the first state to explicitly address veterinarians' authority to communicate with clients, demonstrating that veterinarians can discuss the use of cannabis for medicinal purposes with clients without being reprimanded just for having that conversation."

California veterinarians are now prohibited from prescribing, dispensing, or administering any cannabis or cannabis-based medications, including CBD, under current legislation. A recently proposed measure, however, is attempting to modify this as well.

Michigan and New York are the only two states with clear wording allowing doctors to discuss cannabis for dogs with their clients.

Other states, such as Washington, are stuck with ambiguous legislation. Their State Department of Health even states, "Due to ambiguities at the federal and state levels, we are unable to provide information on the legality of offering cannabis usage counsel to clients."

Overall, vets are put in a tough situation due to state board advice, which means that some cannot or will not discuss cannabis to clients. That is one of the reasons we buy CBD pet treats for cats.

There are several intricate considerations when administering hemp to your pet, including how the individual product works, optimum dosage, potential medicine interactions, adverse effects, and so on. While state boards are still in the learning process, firms like ours spend every waking second offering this same instruction to our clients.

Other groups, like as the Veterinary Cannabis Society and Veterinary Cannabis.org, are also attempting to bridge the information gap and assist pet parents in understanding what to buy and how to administer it.
