Guilt is Powerful

Confession

On this Day of Shame,
I do not ask for respect but rather I plead for your pity.
Pity me like Ivan Ilyich!
Pity is my selfishness,
Shame is my badge.

On this day of Reflection,
I do not ask for compassion but rather I pray for your sympathy.
Sympathy for a confused child!
Sympathy is my hunger,
Reflection is my curse.

On this Day of Atonement,
I do not ask for forgiveness but rather I beg for your mercy.
Mercy for a damned soul!
Mercy is my debt,
Atonement is my fantasy.

On this Day of Judgement,
I do not ask to be pardoned but rather I kneel for your penalty.
Punish me like Cain!
Punishment is my payment,
Judgement is my yearning.

On this day of Retribution,
I do not ask for leniency but rather I apply for your charity.
Charity for the hopelessly indebted!
Charity is my necessity.
Retribution is my unattainable.
