Desert Charm

Desert Charm

A Poem by Himangini Singh

Piece of broken moon
Sand dunes and brush land
Stark brick red mountains reach out
Thirsting for the clouds beyond
A little rain in this terrain
Then Blossom forth the cacti
The prickly pear a few palms
The emerald green oasis
Silver beams of a full moon
Dance and ricochet off rippling sand
Romancing with cymbals and trumpets
Prance eerie shadows on silvery strands
A coverlet of brilliant stars
A cozy camp fire
Orange flames beat time
With songs of fun and laughter.

The sweltering day
turns midnight blue
A brilliant cool sapphire
Tired bodies sleep it out
In tents a traveler's lair
Flags flutter a top heap of horns
Of mountain goats, landmark of bones
Clouds of dust covering tracks

We see our first mirage
of a promised land
On quick waves of a magician's hand
Still-distances to cover
Weathered through a desert storm
Miles, routes and an unchartered course
Calls us to move on
To chase the elusive mystique of a moon scape's Desert calm!
