pulling string

pulling string

A Poem by Rae
"

Some things can't be kept inside forever.

"

I’m pulling string out of my mouth.

I’ve swallowed something

that I did not want to lose in me,

but wanted it inside,

Just for a little while,

to feel it burn,

and remind me I’m alive.

Now I pull the string.

Gagging, I spit it up.

I clean it and set it on a shelf.

So I live most days without it.

But every so often,

I must taste it.

I’ll tie it to a string

and swallow it again.
