Barren

Barren

A Poem by A.J.

Down by the creek where the water ran dry

Where the fish found their grave and the rope swing decays

I found an old skull with dead flowers for eyes

He stared up at me from his perch of rattled bones

He said hey there brother, what brings you this way?

I sat there by the dead mans side and wept,

saying I came for rain and a tide to take me away

the graveless  gave a laugh full of broken teeth

gazing up at the rope above, he said it’s the only way out

the only way out, the only way out

somewhere down the road of thirsting stone

I saw a great fish with nowhere to go

His belly was black, burned by the sun

And maggots fell from his mouth as he spoke

He said brother, if you find that river of hope

Send It back this way soon, send it this way soon

Empty promises behind, I walked ‘til my lips where cracked

And my eyes bore the mark of the crow, angry and slightly cold

Walked till my shoes fell off and my toes burned with the stone

We were all thirsty and alone, all thirsty and alone

Somewhere where hope used to flow.

POWERFUL!! I love this piece. A dystopian world with a twist of macabre. It's scrooge and a wonderful life meets nightmare on Elm street.
