Sippy Cups

Sippy Cups

A Poem by Mark
"

life transitions, it's the only constant.

"
Was it yesterday
or last year?
Those plastic things
with rubber rings
were everywhere?

Toddler toes,
laughter, and screams.
These were my life
stepping on them
as I chased little ones.

The sippy cup
in the dishwasher
on the floor
in the fridge
or in chubby little hands.

They were everywhere
floor to ceiling
thrown on my chair
giving me 'surprise!'
when I sat down.

Thrown on the floor
when Daddy would growl;
a delighted scream
escaping as little legs
started pumping away.

There was a point
I don't now remember
when sippy cups went away
replaced by cans
of fizzy sugar water.

Soccer, football,
basketball games.
Driving lessons
the prom, and eventually
the leaving.

I can't remember where the
sippy cups went
Some box probably.
Nor do I recall
what the favorites were.

And now, it seems like
it happened so fast
here are my toddlers
all grown, buying,

sippy cups.

There's nothing like being a parent to clue us in to what our own parents went through. Oh, but it can't be any other way, and the cycle goes on. Thanks for the reminder, Mark.

Thanks for your comment Sam. When someone can relate to my writing, it gives me a good feeling :)
Awwwh! This took me back. We had those sippy cups everywhere, too, and they could show up in the strangest places. You did a wonderful job of capturing snapshots of the moments as your kids grew. Very sweet and loving. Great looking family! You must be quite proud. They do grow up so quickly.

it's hard to keep up with your growing children. it is inevitable that the sippy cup will no longer be used, but at least it left you with fond memories. great job.

This poem made me smile..I too found that life can be measured in certain objects of the time. Beautiful family as well
