The Infinite Sadness

The Infinite Sadness

A Poem by Matt T. M.

Looking back on friends of youth
Whispering tongues have poisoned truth
Memories buried, in graves they lay
A quake that shakes to this very day
A lonely Mariner that mourns a loss
I wear it like the albatross
For when the time comes, either way
I'll pull up my anchor and sail away
The radio will sing the heartaches of Ben
Wondering of every love that could've been
And I'll accept my fate in every portion
Destined to wander like Sarah Norton
But for me, don't pity at my own folly
Because nothing's as sweet as lovely melancholy

Footnotes: "Ben" in line 9 refers to Ben Gibbard, singer in Death Cab for Cutie and line 10 is a reference to the song "The Sound of Settling." In line 12, "Sarah Norton" is a reference to a ghost that's said to wander the cemetery of Black Diamond Mines near my hometown.
