sun-spangled Sunday

sun-spangled Sunday

A Poem by Heath Muchena

our fiery chemistry
we can’t quite comprehend
feels like living in times before Lavoisier
we’re grateful for the warmth
but clueless of combustion
like fairies in the flame of a blazing romance

we agreed to work on communication
you say I lose my charm
when I give you cryptic messages
tempting you into the deep
then freeing you to speak
making you feel so secure
without promise that I’d ever take the vow
or reveal my vulnerability
as if in a David Chaum mixed network

I say you give me mixed signals
always having me questioning
things I’ll never have answers to
all the same, I so thoroughly enjoy your company
still, the idea of love is unsettling
but I know just how lucky I am because you’re so caring

and maybe that explains it
why we are good for each other
right now, this moment
when our affinity is so tenderly balanced
on this sun-spangled Sunday
