The Fool In Me

The Fool In Me

A Poem by James Probert
"

The heart is so easily fooled.

"
What is it this time?
Why did you come back?
After all that you've done
Is there something you lack?
You ripped out my heart
And caused all my pain.
Do you think that I'll
Let that happen again?

You fooled me the first time
And I let it slide.
You fooled me a second
And I nearly died.
You fooled me the third time
And that's where it ends.
To fool me a fourth time
Would mean no amends.

I gave all I had
But you gave it away.
I fought for us both
But you couldn't be swayed.
You ended it lady
So why are you here?
There's nothing left to give
Aside from my fear.

You fooled me the first time
And that was okay.
When you fooled me the next time
I started to stray.
You fooled me a third time
And that was the end.
To fool me a fourth time
Would end us as friends.

Wore my heart on my sleeve
And you ground it in dirt.
What I fought to make better
You just made it worse.
I tried to get you back
But you didn't want me
You wanted him the whole time
I just couldn't see.

The first time you fooled me
Was a hit I could take
The next time I forgave you
It was a mistake.
The third time you got me
I knew it would end
You won't have a fourth chance
To fool me again.

Kind of reminded me of the song "Last Christmas" by WHAM. The wisest of people become foolish in love. So take heart. I really like the tone of your poem.
