The Taco Bell Poem

The Taco Bell Poem

A Poem by John Sullivan

So I wrote a poem today
it's not about sex or love
or anything like that
in fact I'm not sure what it is about
I'm at Taco Bell like always
the older couple ordering
seem to actually like each other
though they're giving the cashier a real hard time...
and now they're arguing with each other
the argument of old lovers
the kind were they shout it out and
finally
relax
she's telling the cashier girl she's sorry for yelling
and they're just as sweet as could be
they get there food and leave
not knowing
this poem is about them
and how I lied...
this one's about love
after all

A couple like that used to come and eat at my favorite restaurant. I would always sit at my favorite booth, watching them. I know what you mean.

Hey, they make it work! Maybe that's what commitment takes, no one ever said love was perfect... Tha.. read more
Wow, love this poem! Good description of the couple, the situation. I was in CVS and I saw an exchange like this. I wrote a flash fiction piece about it. It’s amazing how you could witness that exchange and use it to write a poem about it.

I just happened to be there with a pen and paper! Thank you so much for reading!
Our Taco Bell is always crowded at the drive thru... even at midnight... yes it's truly interesting to observe strangers and their habits....I know this poem is about love and this couple you describe is the epitome of and older couple's behavior....been lovers for years and arguing is part of their love routine... it just happens to most of us, because we've been partners for so long and all is not about closeness and kisses....
nicely described...

Poets are observers. Taco Bell is as good a place as any to pen a poem. Yes, a love poem. A healthy disagreement between two, then kiss and make up. That’s why some relationships work and others don’t. I enjoyed this observational write John. Pleased I stopped by.

Love is shown in so many different ways in each chapter of life. Your poem is a snapshot in time. People watching makes great poetry. Lydi**(

Thank you for reading! I just happened to be there with a pen and a notebook
And so they are now immortalized. Inspiration comes and goes in the most unusual places..why not Taco Bell? I myself was there last week with a host of homeless vampires standing outside and obviously drunk, claiming that they hadn't had a thing to eat in over four days ...I offered to buy them something and they just wanted the money. Liqour store was right across the street..Ah well, give without expectations I always say. Like the way you turned the poem back on itself at the end. Reality is always an interesting fuse.
