Midnight's Soundtrack

Midnight's Soundtrack

A Poem by Phoenix

Nights I lie down and all I do is think

I turn on some music to help me sleep

My mind calms and in the words I sink….

Where I go, when I go there

No more whispering anymore

Only hymns upon your lips

A mystic wisdom rising with them to shore

My thoughts calm while my heart begins to ache

For what I don’t have in the dreams that I make…

I’m so tired of being here

suppressed by all my childish fears

Now I’m wondering what is fake

and what is real.

My heart makes up its own sad story

Not even based in reality

Where it comes from and where it goes

There’s a possibility I wouldn’t know.

Won’t somebody help me chase the shadows away,

Take me through the darkness to the break of the day.

Do you remember the way that you touched me before?

All the trembling sweetness I love and adore.

Your face, saving promises whispered like prayers.

I don’t need them.

 I need the darkness

the sweetness

the sadness

the weakness

 I need this…

What I dream of may not even exist.

I need a lullaby

a kiss goodnight

angel sweet

love of my life…..

To stop thinking, maybe

To stop feeling…never.

I turn up the volume, I change the song -

I’m just as distracted as ever.

I want to hold you close, skin pressed against me tight

Take all you want from me, and take all I’ve got from me

So happy I could die, and it’s alright….

The melodies soothe, and the beats hypnotize

At last, I see only darkness behind my eyes.

And as I dream of answers in every rhyme,

The music sings along with me, this midnight.

Author's Note

Phoenix
This is made up of some of the songs I was obsessed with this past year or so, and kind of combines all those sleepless nights at once...Music really is helpful sometimes.

Here are the songs, in order:

“My Immortal” – Evanescence
“The Church Channel” – Say Anything
“Possibility” – Lykke Li
“Gimme Gimme Gimme” – ABBA
“My Skin” – Natalie Merchant

“Baby Girl, I’m a Blur” – Say Anything
“So Happy I Could Die” – Lady Gaga

I wouldn't have cared if you miss spelled every word or there had been no rhyme or consistency, you successfully integrated 4 of my favorite songs into a story and a feeling that I know so well. My advantage is that I am back to never dreaming behind closed eyes.

I have so many ideas and feelings, and they usually buzz around inside me wildly. When I can gather up enough of them, then a piece of writing emerges and I feel refreshed. more..
