I told myself (short slam)A Poem by Jane MagnaniShort slam piece, somewhat unfinished :)I told myself I knew what I was doing, That this path I was on was a clear-cut shot to heaven, But in reality, It was an elevator to hell. Words bounced off our tongues-- I love you’s and thanks babe, But we were like fire breathing teenage heartaches Our love rolling of our tongues in bursts of flames and our hearts boiling over with beauty, We couldn’t stop ourselves. Reckless, restless, breathless, We laid under a star-dappled sky and watched the world float by, We were millions of miles away from fear, But closer than ever before to pain. I told myself I knew what I was doing, That first times are forgettable, But last times never are. I told myself that my first time probably wasn’t his, And that this wouldn’t last much longer than the high. And you and I came crashing down. Plummeting from space, Crash landing from Mars, We hit hard, Broken bones, a few scars. Because I told myself I knew what I was doing. I told myself this was a clear-cut shot to heaven. When in reality, It was an elevator to hell. First times are forgettable. Last times never are. © 2018 Jane MagnaniAuthor's Note
