In A Thousand Envelopes

In A Thousand Envelopes

A Poem by Jared Orlando

I promised you a whole heap of things
Unhooking the moon from the sky
I’d place it in front of you and watch your
Smile in the glow of it
We proceeded to open empty, tattered books
And upon the pages we watched as
Polaroids appeared, and inside them
We were dancing with fireflies
Amongst small lanterns hanging from trees
And out of a decades-old newspaper
I crafted you a ring and told you
That if you had any interest in loving
A fool like me,
You’d better marry me now before
We turn right into dust
The cobblestone that we walked
On our first date at a coffee shop downtown
I lifted from the ground
Dirt still caked on the bottom and
Dropped them at your feet
The way your dress would sway
When you teetered on the curbside
Your slender arms pointed straight
Toward the mountains, toward the sea
And the silent laughter you’d produce
When I misspoke, when I misstepped,
I’ve collected it all now and
Sealed them up in a thousand envelopes

If only I knew
Where you’ve gone to

This poem is so sweet and sentimental. I especially like the lines "Unhooking the moon from the sky / I’d place it in front of you and watch your / Smile in the glow of it" and "And out of a decades-old newspaper / I crafted you a ring." Your images are very telling and dreamy.
