My Heart Is That of the Tulips

My Heart Is That of the Tulips

A Poem by Jenna Kay

My heart is that of the tulips
In the day time, they bloom in breathtaking color
Their petals spread, bursting forth to capture the light
But as the darkness comes, they shut themselves
Suddenly
Afraid
The night is too black and the cold coils itself around the delicate flowers
And the tulips hide, as do I
I too am scared of the dark
Like a child, I pick the petals from the flower of my heart and ask if I could love myself or not
I heard once that girls are like roses
We are more so like tulips
Like ivy
Like poison ivy
