They Don't Bother Talking

They Don't Bother Talking

A Poem by Gerald Ray
"

elderly couple experiencing mature love

"

They don’t bother talking. Talk just gets in the way

After all these years together there just isn’t that much to say

So, just spending time together is consolation enough

Though sometimes they reminisce about those days when times were so tough

They’re happy to let sleeping dogs lie, no need to hash and rehash

As he struggles to his feet, takes out his wallet and hands her some

cash

Then he shuffles on ahead of her and heads for the door

Leaving her to pay the bill and tip the waitress like she has so many times before

He depends on her more now since his stroke left him partially

paralyzed

And she’s just happy she still has him even with his deformity thinly disguised

In fact it seems their love is stronger in these days of the winter of life’s years

When all you did or didn’t accomplish doesn’t matter much in spite of all your fears

Chivalry is all but gone now from a relationship that has endured over

time

And their words, which go unspoken, are way more precious then any they may speak with flowers, verse or rhyme

She loves to watch romantic unreality in her favorite soaps sitting in her favorite chair

As she listens to his gentle humming as he putters in his garden, totally unaware

That it’s their song he can’t forget though there are many other lapses in memory for which he has succumbed

Which means to her he’s contented with hurtles hurtled, rough edges smoothed and pains mostly numbed

They’ve never stopped to ponder how sad it is their peace comes so late in life

They’re just happy they’ve made life so successful as husband and wife

And they both know they haven’t just settled for the next best they could do

If that was the case their love would have been long gone while it was still fresh and new

They’ve worked hard together to make it happen, though the road has been bumpy once or twice

But they’ve found a way around the worst of it when it looked like it wasn’t going to turn out so nice

And now the rewards for a life well lived stop by to check on them now that they’re getting on

And they take shear delight in loving those who will carry on after they are gone

And they feel they’ve led a better, fuller life than any Hollywood love story could ever provide

Because happiness comes from within and success in life from the commitment you hold inside

Yes, they don’t bother talking

Talk just gets in the way
