Darkness

Darkness

A Story by Justin Horrocks
"

From your dark.

"
Darkness connected me and my mother. When others used the dark to sleep me and my mother would drink tea and talk. Night time was our time. I am grateful to the dark of the night, for it granted me precious time with my queen.

To fear the darkness is not logical. We are born from the darkness and we shall return to the darkness. True beauty comes from the darkness! For one to be able to gaze at the stars one must do so in darkness. To walk in the night is blissfully calm, for darkness is my friend. For one to understand the beautiful mystery of the blackness we must first understand the following....

Darkness creates solitude..
Darkness is freedom..
Darkness is to see with the mind not the eyes..
Darkness is your ally not your enemy..
We grow in the darkness/womb. We are born from the darkness.
Darkness is calm and steady..

Darkness is mistaken for fear! Darkness can give you the power to dream.
Darkness protects me from the openness of the world. I feel lost in the light waiting for darkness to arrive. Like a candle at night I need darkness to shine.

Darkness is the greatest gift to the mind and soul.
To understand oneself one must master the darkness.
I shall not walk towards the light when Death is upon me for the light can’t be trusted.
Darkness follows us wherever we go patiently waiting for us to loose the fear and embrace ones darkness.

Always remember it was darkness that gave birth to the light.

This is a lovely celebration of what is often perceived as the underside of things. The thematic tie to birth through association with motherhood brings the write full circle, with a childhood memory with mother at the beginning, and the origins of creation at the very end. Excellent use of irony throughout - one example is "I shall not walk towards the light when Death is upon me for the light can't be trusted."

Well done, Justin.

I wrote a piece years ago called "Chiaroscuro", if I can find it in my notes, I will repost it here.
