Cursed to Live in Poetry

Cursed to Live in Poetry

A Poem by John McGrael
"

free verse, sort of a spoken word feel

"

I... I am a poet!

Cursed to live in poetry!

Cursed to write out everything I am,

So there is nothing left to live in me.

My body! My body is worthless!

For it is not where I live;

I live in word after word,

Line after line,

Stanza after stanza,

Rhyme after rhyme...

Meticulously... passionately crafted,

To form thought after thought.

My thoughts!

My dreams!

My mind!

All in snapshots for the world to see...

I... I am a poet!

Cursed to live in poetry!

And though a poem...

Can drive a man to love,

And even drive the world to peace,

And may inspire everyone,

Of mankind's greatest deeds!

A poem,

A snapshot of...

My thoughts,

My dreams,

My name!

A poem cannot feel,

Cannot breathe,

Cannot grow,

Cannot change!

A poem cannot hug or be hugged!

Kiss or be kissed!

Love or be loved,

As something more!

and I...

I want to feel,

To breathe,

To grow,

To change!

I want to hug, and be hugged!

Kiss, and be kissed!

I want to love, and be loved!

As something more...

Than snapshots of a fecund mind,

That a lover merely reads...

But alas, I am a poet,

Cursed to live in poetry!

Oh, my...how on earth did I miss this one?? This truly is brilliant. I agree with Lynne, it feels as if you've slipped inside my mind, and stealthily stolen pages from the diary in my mind. After reading this, I feel exposed, as if I've been caught on camera by a peeping tom. That IS meant as a compliment, my friend. It's a rare gift you have...to write in such a way that, once read, the words seem to then belong to the reader.

Oh yes, we are all cursed (and yet blessed) to 'live in poetry'!
You have hit it right with your brilliant words and apt descriptions of the goings on inside our heads.
Really enjoyed!!

touching,,,agony narrated so beautifully,,,a melancholy playing on the reader's mind and the ending,,,an innocent yearning lovely in its tears,,,,
line after line;
stanza after stanza,
its a Farhad, perhaps, narrating his love for Sheeren,,,a poet caged in his love for words,,,

another solid write john - you definitely have a gift. you played upon some real feelings i think a lot of poets have had - when we suffer the inability to live our lives as comfortably and profoundly as we can in the words we conjure. it's a pleasure reading your work. we have a group here called existential driftwood for poets like you - they are good, honest people who will always read your work and give you feedback and put your name out there for others to read. check it out and if you are interested apply to join and i'll see to it that you are accepted.
