Alias

Alias

A Poem by J.J. Matthews
"

Ever felt different somehow? Like you're not yourself? Yeah, me neither.

"

Some people think that their name isn’t best.

That they'd rather have a better signature than “Bill Smith” or “Robert Hill”.

This name that people take is called an alias.

It has different names for different professions.

Musicians call it a stage name.

Writers call it a pen name.

Comedians call it a personality.

Wrestlers, DJs, ventriloquists, playwrights,

All can have an alias.

For some people, like wrestlers,

An alias is compulsory.

There’s just one thing I don’t understand about it.

We all know not to doubt this.

How soon until you become the alias?

How long did it take to become Slash?

How long did it take to become The Rock?

How long did it take to become Excision?

It’s almost as if nobody knows who you truly are.

They don’t actually see you, they see another person.

Think about it.

Nobody sees Daniel Radcliffe,

They see Harry Potter.

Nobody really sees Joel Zimmerman,

They see Deadmau5.

Nobody really sees you,

They see another person.

Becoming an alias is a strange experience.

It’s like slowly losing little bits of yourself.

You get so used to being seen as this separate personality.

You begin to act, speak, even think slightly differently.

You start adapting yourself to what you believe they would be like.

It isn’t on purpose,

It just happens.

You never really notice it until you look back.

You reflect on something you said or did.

You think “Wow, did that just happen?”

“That’s not like me”

You even start to look like them too.

I know an alias is just supposed to be you with a different name,

Just listen.

It's not a case of a complete feature change,

More an expression or routine change.

You may take on a more serious face than usual,

Your eyes could be more jittery and active,

You could be a lot more sleepy.

I’m sure Dwayne Johnson didn’t raise his eyebrow everyday before becoming The Rock.

Aliases are just characters to play.

It can just be a new name,

Or even an entirely new person.

They’re just characters to play.

It’s up to you if they’re real or not.
