The Watcher on the Hill

The Watcher on the Hill

A Poem by Zachary E. Tenney
"

Life just isn't fair.

"
Sitting cross-legged atop a circular hill
Gazing out tiredly over some distant golden landscape

Look, over there!

A sacred tryst
Two lovers
Down in the earthy nook
Glowing with a new precedent for joy

And up there beyond reach
Grinning clouds, so light and wispy and full of glee
Untouched by oppression

And what's that?
Children laughing, immaturely immune
To this world's wretched reality

See that innocent young girl strolling home
Down a wide shining cobblestone path
Skipping
Holding flowers in her hand

Smiling
Laughing
Foreign concepts to the Watcher on the Hill

Tears roll down his somber face
His bitter teeth clenched
Cloaked by frowning lips

Uselessness
Alcoholism
Borderline Suicidal
Impregnated with agony

The inescapable truth
His soul is withering
Descending into black

Beauteous denizens down below
Strong enough to make the climb
But lacking the desire

One glance up to the hilltop
Would save the Watcher from his hopeless fate
One lovely, friendly human to share the day with
Might just keep the Watcher alive

IS THAT TOO MUCH TO ASK FOR?

But no one cares for him
No one wants to come and save him
So the Watcher fades

His soul departs and drifts pointlessly into the ether
His flesh remains atop the hill, slowly rotting
Seeping down and joining the dirt
Poisoning the lush green grass

The Watcher is gone
His eyes could bear no more
And so he left

Just like that.

This is really nice. I love the imagery and the fact that this poem is also a story with a beautiful plot. I could really relate to the watcher in the feeling of helplessness and sorrow. But I can also relate to the world below. Almost completely ignorant to the pain of others. This is the second poem I've read for today where I could relate to completely different elements of the piece. I'm beginning to conclude that we can relate any situation, if we take the time to see the similarities. Great job.
Keep up the good work.
