If I Am Better than This

If I Am Better than This

A Poem by K Ambing

The stars you are gazing at

might have died long ago.

If I am better than this,

I might start talking about

how even in their death

they still try to make sure

their light reaches your eyes;

if I am better than this,

I would’ve said their sole

purpose is fulfilled tonight.

Instead, I rant about how

I wish to be that burning

ball floating in space,

pulling things just because

I can & when I am done,

no one can escape my death,

gripping tight, oh how

I wish I can afford to be

that selfish that demanding

that dead sure thing. But

you think it’s funny how

my hand is still on your

cheek while saying I wish

to be a distant thing. There

are days when I'm too busy

avoiding cliché, I end up

taking the wrong turn,

coming back late, & find

our home slightly bent

towards the sun, after being

deprived of warmth for

too many times. If I am

better than this, I would’ve

told you how lucky I am to

get to see your face this close,

not lightyears apart.

"But
you think it’s funny how
my hand is still on your
cheek while saying I wish
to be a distant thing." This poem is lovely but this part is so nicely said it is all I am thinking about.
I know talking about something disconnected and clearly contrary to myself; where my head is longing for something distant while my hand is grabbing what is near. That is the story I get from this, but whether I'm right or wrong that line is just said so wonderfully that I had to acknowledge it.
