The First Day

The First Day

A Poem by Alex P.
"

A poem I wrote about my first day at a Panamanian school (Also in spanish)

"

I squirm in my uniform,
Cotton scratching my sun heated skin
Eyes pierce me from all directions,
I have no where to run

I should be used to this,
It's just another school, right?
But it's different this time,
I'm the odd one out

Whispers buzzing around me

Like I'm in a nest of angry hornets
While some look on with curiosity,
Others are judging

We stand in line and look at the flag,
I stand in silence while everyone around me sings
The heat is overwhelming in the morning sun,

My nerves can’t take much more of this

I hasten to separate myself from the crowd,
Lifting my skirt to run faster
Inside the cool room,
My head on porcelain
My nerves repair themselves
As my breakfast meets a watery end
