Heartstrings

Heartstrings

A Poem by Alex P.
"

An older one I found but had never published, not sure how I missed it

"
She smiles as if it’s nothing,
While daggers rip through her chest
She guards the pain in her eyes,
And brushes away the tears

You can’t be subjected to this pain

Of course this is silly,
She had to go sometime,
It’s not forever
Not yet

Still, she can’t seem to stop,
And finally,
In a moment of weakness,
You realize just how much this hurts

Each goodbye pulls on heartstrings already taunt
Stretching them thousands of miles each time
She knows both of you can handle it
It’s not forever
It won’t ever be

Soon the strings will snap back
And you’ll be holding her again,
But until then,
Each day isn’t quite full
