Sex Ed

Sex Ed

A Poem by Cat

In 8th grade we were required to take a sexual education class, taught by our homeroom teacher an old rusty man informing us about things like the names of private parts where the penis goes and how to put a condom on how awkward was that. The 10 easy ways to STD’s it’s funny most of us are on step 3 you see they never taught us about relationships domestic violence domestic abuse, they never taught us about consent or about rape how bodies are not meant to be misused, they never taught us One in five women and one in 71 men will be raped at some point in their lives, they never taught us men are raped too and it shouldn’t affect their pride, one in four girls and one in six boys will be sexually abused before they reach their fully grown size, they never taught us 325,000 children are at risk of becoming victims of commercial child sexual exploitation each year that’s before they even know the names of these places invaded the places we call private parts, they never taught us the average age at which girls first become victims of prostitution is 12 to 14 years old, and the average age for boys is 11 to 13, they never taught us the likelihood that a person suffers suicidal or depressive thoughts will increase after sexual violence, they never taught us that people who have been sexually assaulted are more likely to use drugs than the general public to ease the silence, they never taught us sexual violence also affects victims’ relationships with their family, friends, and co-workers, they never taught us that it’s not our fault, and that we’re not crazy, they never taught us about the fault of the ones who stole our sanity. They never taught us these things in school. Maybe just maybe if they had,

I wouldn’t have been so afraid of the vacant silence filling it with lies like okay lies like go ahead

What I meant was

No don’t touch me

What I meant was

No this is not what I want

What I meant was

No this is not for you anymore

What I meant was

No

They never taught us no

And maybe if they had

He would've known what it meant.

Bam! There it is.

A little nostalgia, followed by a rant. Then Truth.

This reads like a spoken word piece.

haha thanks!
This is compelling to read as I found myself engrossed in each point you made. What started out as maybe something amusing turned into a very serious journal of thoughts. Excellent writing.

Just a note: Commas and periods would help a lot.
