![]() Journey of the InternetA Poem by Kally Oliva Whitman![]() I'm in the midst of an individual, layman's research project on what is the internet and how do I have it. What I mean is no one is helping me with this and I am not a professional.![]()
So, humanity could've formed anyway, we shouldn't be here. We're just an amoeba that had a dream, and we reached and we tried and somehow, that thing that is life, characterized us. But we could have been sociopaths. We shouldn't be here. Like a program, certain inputs run my brings, the twine together to form the tree I am. I know things like racism, extinction, and anti-LGBTQIA+ shouldn't exist. I know I shouldn't know every letter in the community name, it shouldn't be a run on, not when your trying to get the masses to understand the point. Just as civil rights seems a neat, petite, powerful phrase. But those do exist and thus, we shouldn't. Because we killed all the ethnicities, all the religions, all the relationships. Or at least, that how stories make me think it would have gone. Yet histories deny that. It's not possible; that we survived against all the circumstances! Elementary taught me stories follow a predictable, thematic plot. The big bad wolf was always going to be bad no matter whether I knew why or not. He was always going to be bad. Haters were always going to hate, it seems impossible the good guys would always win in spite of them. It's logical, I think, I think I've figured it out, understood it. Psychology says we are inclined to hate what we don't know or understand, what's different and unfamiliar. So the weed-nature of racism makes sense. It grows to languages. We want people to be like us, we have to think on another tier to appreciate difference. With such a major battle, how has the human race made it? Bad guys...win, they are always bad guys. The odds are unbearable. Yet that is not how the story goes, that's not how history goes. We win. We as a species win. And yet there have been major losses. And if we can lose in our story, how can we win against the odds. Losing is plausible. Yet we're here. Hate and suppression exist; we could've been sociopaths; we're just amoebas. Did it have to be this way? That is a question. Did we have to make it? Did we have to be characterized by life? Or could we have been sociopaths, robots...something else. Could the Internet have been something else? The Internet shouldn't exist. It could exist different ways; we choose to make it this way. I understand nothing about it. It could be sociopathic, it could be dark. It could exist in a new and different way, just as we could've. It could be born again a different thing. Yet we win against all odds. And the Internet is just an extension of us.
