The Things We Missed in the Rush

The Things We Missed in the Rush

A Poem by Rhys Jacobs
"

Looking back at the ones we've lost and the things we could've done.

"
We never got that drink,
We never bought dinner
We never had coffee
or slept through movie night.
And isn't it tragic?
Isn't it horrible
To die so young and beautiful,
A face preserved
In formaldehyde, pixels and celluloid?
And isn't it selfish of us
To expect that you'd stay
When the shortness of your candle
Still lit fires in our hearts
From hospital beds?

I am grateful and twisted,
Torn and partially digested
Like the food we left cold
On that serendipitous, sleepless evening.
And what a miracle it was,
A meeting of wires across the sky
And we're driving away in your car.

And isn't funny how lost we were,
Misled by dirt roads
And cul-de-sacs?
I promise you,
Though the wall between us is tall,
One day it will fall
And we shall be reunited once more.
And we'll finally get that drink,
We'll go Dutch on dinner
We'll sip our coffee
And have movie nights forever.
