New Year

New Year

A Poem by Katelyn Barker

Dancing,
a frenzy of movement,
the beat in your soul.
Making you beg for more.
You sing and dance
with all your might,
dancing frantically through the night.
And now you’re done.
Body so tired you feel gone.
You lay down to sleep,
gone are the thoughts that you cannot keep.
and sleep comes easy,
dreams are calm,
your head spins round
when you get up from the ground.
You know you won’t win,
the pain,
starting to begin.
You lean over,
thinking of how you failed,
and the night was fun,
but the music started sounding like a gun,
and now you can’t move.
paralyzed by fear,
you’ve made it to the new year.
