Empty Shells

Empty Shells

A Poem by Eliott

When we dance
We're both bound to slip and fall sometimes
And we might break
But we can learn to pick ourselves back up
And dance again

I know
Things will change
We'll grow
And leave behind
Our old skin
Empty shells
Of who we were

And everyone will change
Everyone will grow
Some of them will leave us behind
But when we're left alone
We'll still have each other
To talk to
To cling to

When we speak
We might stutter and repeat sometimes
Or be silent
Too afraid to make a sound at all
But we will sing

I know
Things will change
We'll grow
And leave behind
Our old skin
Empty shells
Of who we were

And everyone will change
Everyone will grow
Some of them will leave us forgotten
But when we're left alone
We'll have each other
To dance with
To be with

Who were you then, who are you now?
Are we, together, new somehow?
Are we better than we once were?

Who was I then, who am I now?
And who are we, both new somehow?
So much better than I once was

And everyone will change
Everyone will grow
Some of them might be back tomorrow
But for now while we're waiting
We still have each other
Together
Forever
