Dogs and Cats

Dogs and Cats

A Poem by KeithFowler
"

Why Cannine and Feline are taken by one or the other gender.

"

Fertile valleys, wellsprings nursing life anew

Did give birth to man and women’s children

When days were new, sun rose in the sky could

Be counted on just one hand and night still unknown

Until Heaven guarded creations founding secret.

Among those companions of man was a canine

Whose closeness to man was a puzzle to the mind

Of woman, no event predicted this show of goodwill.

She asked him one day, “What word or trick hast thou done

To draw to thee this animal as thy constant loyal mate?”

“Is no trick or word of power which I use, we two have

Been sworn by our Father above to remain by each other’s

Side, parting not but in death, such like we have been commanded.”

Woman was saddened at this answer for she too wished for such

An animal that would be her constant watch and gentle love.

As she walked among the other animals within the forest and glades

Of the land, which they inhabited, she sat upon the base of a tree.

As she rested there, a serpent crept upon her, its intentions

Were as evil as ever, once more to poison the creations of the Lord.

Unseen above in the branches of the tree laid a cat, feline she was

Moreover, saw the serpent whose mouth now gaped with dripping fangs

And pounced upon its head and neck and thrashed it against the tree

Killing the evil that would have broken man’s heart and hers as well.

Upon waking woman leapt to her feet but saw that the creature was dead.

And the cat was once more back among the branches of the tree, grooming

Herself. “Thank you, you have killed that which banished us from Paradise”.

“It is my duty to guard thee Woman, for the Angels above saw the tears

Which thou shed when man alone was given a guard to watch ore him.”

“Then I will make a pact with you, that so long as you shall watch ore me,

I shall do the same, but in doing so this will put you in conflict with the dog”

“Very well, said the cat, “I agree, but unlike the dog I shall decide if thou art

In danger, for energy is not to be wasted by such silly pursuits as hunting.”

Therefore, it is to this day, that while dogs will do anything to please a man,

Cats will only do that which amuses them or is for their benefit.
