A Part of Me Too

A Part of Me Too

A Poem by Kelley Quinn

I am from little girl giggles, staying up late with my sister

Because we know we aren’t supposed to.

I am from long walks on the beach with mommy and sister,

Hunting for that one certain shell.

I am from my Irish heritage and the resounding history of my name:

A fighter, a defender.

I am a warrior.

I am from friends who care about me

And would do anything to see me smile.

Without them, I would be a shell

Like the ones lost on those forgotten beach trips.

I am from jeers for being different,

To figuring out that it’s okay to be me.

It’s okay that I’m not like you,

Because my shell changes.

I am from some way out of the daily

Routine of life.

I am from New York.

I am from long drives up there every summer

to get away from life.

For a while. For a week.

For a moment.

I am from my strength and health,

I am from a search for shells

 That no longer exist

A search for a grasp of reality
In the natural way.

I am from these mistakes

I am from these memories.

I am me.
