About Time

About Time

A Poem by Kenneth Nicholas Lowe

I sit in silence and pensive moods, but thoughts soon grow wild
I think of years when I was young with only duties of being a child
I ponder, plunder and test my brain, which age is this? I question
O time, thou art a heartless b***h, you grew me ahead of season

I trained for years, when I would sleep, post a hearty meal after noon
But now, I work to the fight the sleep, my heart is torn in two
I forced my heart to fall in love with trivial hobbies, in the summer
Now hobbies are lost with forgotten will, when come the years of perpetual labor

The dogma of my kinder years, to rush my growth fuelled by envy
Envious of the unchallenged adults, that ends at sunrise, a party
I dreamed for long, the nights were thus, of my party till the sun was re-born
O, how I'd dance and drink and sing and repeat till old or gone

The dream turned true, with much of error, a misguided kid's foolish endeavour
T'was unlike the dream, but there was fun and fervour, but none hath told of the morning hang over
How can one work, think or perform any human function
After an orgy of dance, drink, song and sleep deprivation

They lied, they did, they hid it well, their pains and their frustrations
A month in their shoes, a log was more rested, life has always limitations
To balance work and pleasure is for gods, they are life's most seductive addictions
More than coke and smoke, and drink and poke, we are driven by ambition

I cursed them all and generations of their kins, to hell, that they may suffer
Till a promotions came, to ease my pain and bring hell to next batch of college hires
In Time I've grown, through Time I've known, to pick and choose the better
To reach the highest efforts made, there can be no greater teacher

In Time, it has made the old seem new, of hobbies and of pleasure
The work grew short, the effort less, Time I've grown to know ye better
Time has brought a feeling of youth, and worked life's burdens light
In Time, it balances good and evil and the wrong will be made right
