When We Were Kids

When We Were Kids

A Poem by Melissa Ridge

Remember when we couldn't wait to grow up?

Before Peter flew back to Neverland
And the Rugrats were all grown up
We would pick at scabs
Not emotional scars
We destroyed sand castles
Not friendships
We played with toys
Not hearts

The pain we understood was the scratches on our knees
Not the blow of betrayal as the knife sinks to spine

Life was without romance (we had all the love we needed)
Life was without expectations (sure what could be expected of us?)
The future was light years away
School was for the big boys and girls
Who we so desperately wanted to be

Staying up till the sun went down was an accomplishment that swelled our hearts
Now we're wide awake in the early hours wondering what went wrong.
We warded off sleep because there was too much to do and to see
Now we wait for it to wash over us because we've done enough and seen too much

Remember when we couldn't wait to grow up?
What were we thinking?
See, Peter Pan had it figured out all along
Never grow up

Amazing! I always taught of growing up, but after a few months back i actually don't want to and to bring a fictional character into this poem leaves me with no intention but to say that even Peter Pan can give advice too
I really like this poem :)
Good Job
