Don't Tell

A Story by Ryann
"

Two women, discover something unique between them.

Pinning her blonde locks into place, flattening her blazer against her pale skin, Elizabeth grabbed her briefcase before heading out the door. Another day of attempting to sell a pair of shoes- slippers. The type of shoe that pairs nicely with your average housewife. As she headed to her teal Cadillac, she sighed again; a working woman didn’t make for a good social status. Luckily for her, her pretty face brought in sales but also the taunting of word of mouth. As she traveled to a far city, one that didn’t recognize her pale blonde hair and green eyes, she double-checked her address sheet to confirm she was in the right place.

As laid in front of her was a high-end neighborhood, with white picket fences trailing along the sidewalk. The street was covered in white petals. As the trees provided shade, they also allowed for the perfect amount of light to leak through their leaves. Checking herself in her car’s mirror, she fixed her deep red lipstick and checked her teeth before grabbing her case, which carried a delicate pair of slippers.

Making her way to the first door, she straightened her skirt and fixed her tie before knocking. A practice smile was printed along her face, as the door opened, a woman emerged from behind it. The sunlight that peered from behind the trees hit her tan skin most elegantly, as her dark, wavy, long locs fell around her shoulders to her waist. The woman peered from the side of the door before locking eyes with Elizabeth.

“Hello ma’am, could I interest you in the softest pillows your feet have ever lain in?”

The woman giggled before fully stepping out from behind her door. Revealing her almost matching height to Elizabeth.

“What do you have to offer, Miss Salesman?” She smiled, tilting her head in response.

“Oh, um, yes, here you see.” Elizabeth stuttered over her words. It felt as if she had seen a goddess. As her heart began to race, she wondered what this feeling was. She had never felt such things for a man before, let alone a random woman, a customer, she corrected herself.

After her mandated Sloangan and spiel, they had exchanged names, learning the gorgeous woman's name was Gracie.

“Well, how about you come in and show me these slippers. I’ll pour you some tea.” She opened her door invitingly.

Normally, Elizabeth would be wary of entering a customer's house, but Gracie's presence drew her in. Making their way to the living room, Elizabeth set her briefcase down. Opening the latches and began to set up the presentation, as she also adversely checked her appearance. Gracie soon returned with a fine china set, a side of honey and sugar adorned the platters.

“So tell me about these slippers,” She smiled.

Elizabeth, awestruck by the woman's deep blue eyes, stuttered once more, their proximity now flustered her. As she handed them to her, their hands touched, and for a moment, the two lingered in this position before Gracie smiled once more. Drawing her hands and items back into her lap. Elizabeth let out a small cough and fixed her tie while taking a small sip of tea. Which just so happened to be the most relaxing thing she had tasted in a while.

“These are nice, I’ll take them, Miss Elizabeth.” She reached for her wallet.

“Oh yes, thank you, ma’am,” She replied.

“Of course,” She opened her wallet to hand the 15 dollars for the pair. As she handed the money to her, their hands caught each other once more. This time, the tension that filled the room had finally been shattered, as Gracie leaned in towards Elizabeth, planting a kiss on her red lips. The two held each other for a moment before they heard keys jingling at the door.

The two pulled off each other, wiping the lipstick residue off each other. Grace's body grew tense as she realized.

“Run!” She urged.

“What,” Elizabeth questioned, as the two urgently packed her things up.

“It’s my husband; if he sees you, he’ll be mad.” She quickly explained while leading Elizabeth to the back door.

“WHAT?” Elizabeth shockingly stepped out the back door, questioning what she had done. Not only did she kiss a woman, she kissed a married woman. Speed walking to her car, Elizabeth sat behind the wheel questioning why she had just felt as if she met the love of her life and what she was going to do about it.
