Mommy Dearest

Mommy Dearest

A Poem by Kathrine Rethorn

Mommy Dearest
Here we are again, It’s two in the morning
and your heart aches. There’s an empty dent
in the bed where a body used to be. You
did it again. Let a man invade our house, your
temple. He’s left you sticky and sore to clean up
the mess you’ve made. A mess you keep making with
no idea how this hurts the both of us.
There you go again, off to the bathroom
to break the mirror we bought last week.
Break it the same as the first fifteen. You’ll
cry and realize how pathetic you are. Brush
your teeth till they bleed then shower with water
hot enough to melt your skin hoping to remove
the scum.
There it is again, the creak in the floors as
you try to sneak down the hall and back
to your room. Try to pretend like nothing
happened, like your life isn’t wasting away.
Then you’ll make breakfast in the morning;
pancake and scrambled eggs with sausage links
all drowned in sickly sweet maple syrup.
Again... you’ll pretend
like you’re the perfect mother.

not often one sees the child scolding the parent ...
stark and brutally honest in an innocent manner that is not condescending
a touchy subject but well done
good on you for having the balls to post such
