Mirror or Self- Reflection

Mirror or Self- Reflection

A Poem by Nevada Wolf

I don’t need you anymore
To show me the graying
I need not see it to know I age

To help me cover my face
No longer do I desire to hide
Or improve what is naturally beautiful

To show me the marks upon my skin
I feel everything within
So why must I see?

To help me shave or cut
I have a partner now
To let me know if I missed a spot

I do not need you anymore
You are the bane of my day
That forces my superficiality at first light

And my vanity before the night
That takes away from our vision
Of who we truly are

You do not show me my fatigue
I feel when I have not slept
And my body desires to rest

You did not help me with my cancer
You did not show me my seizure
You did not reflect my AIDs

I feel, we feel, we do not need you
To tell us we’re dying
Or to tell us we’re alive

You serve no purpose but to feed the ego
Forcing us to waste time
As we pick and scrape and peel away

While we look into you
Instead of looking into ourselves
We become more hollow

The road we choose to follow
Is that of freedom
We will be free of the addiction

And live our lives free of you
As we awaken
To all the beauty that lies within

There is more picking and scraping and peeling
To do there than ever to be done on the surface
From decades and centuries of neglect

It’s time we say goodbye to you
And all that you represent
As we awaken

Our beauty is not based on what you see
In the mirror
Seeing from within

For within us lies more beauty
Than you could ever show us
In you.
