Maturation

Maturation

A Poem by Lauren Xena Campbell
"

What does it mean to a writer to grow up, the flight of maturation or its demise?

"

‘Once upon a time’ so the legends say,
Knight in armour battles for the win,
To bring honour to family and kin,
Protectors of the realm and its ways.

But this fairy-tale telling has long since flown,
And everyday reinforcements come to be,
The reality of the child that once lives within me,
As parent and preacher teach of truth, so to have I grown.

Leaving thoughts of might and maiden,
And in replacement the sight of war,
Hell on earth, these visions shall plague forever more,
The penalty of maturation leaves the future leaden.

Yes, I get this. And the last line has the ring of truth in it. Basically, it is romance vs reality. I think the cause of romance took a big dent with the slaughter of the American Civil War which sort of pointed the way to WW1, which led to WW2. We have since had post-modernism, cold-war MAD (mutual assured destruction) and the triumph of materialism, with concepts such as Big Brother and instant gratification for all replacing the finer concepts of honour, patience, loyalty. Roamce will never die, but hard-nosed reality, especially of the capitalistic-profit-is-all type and the sneering cynicism and contempt for losers that often goes with is like an exceptionally assertive weed. Balance is all. Without balance I think the last line of your poem is totally right. A future devoid of romance would be leaden, for society and for us as individuals.
