The Rose Ride

The Rose Ride

A Poem by Tricia Pattinson

The Rose Ride
by Tricia Pattinson

The Sun’s pink rose
appeared
over
the far off
peaks
of Milky Valley
transforming the
quiet
slopes
from night
blue
to pinkish
hue.

As the curtain
of Night’s stars
slowly
rolled
back
a rainbow
of colors
rushed
to fill
the world.

Quietly
Webster Spider
ascended
up 1 Oak Tree
also known
as Rabbit House.

Tapping
gently
on Patti Rabbit’s
bedroom
knothole
window
Webster Spider
whispered
“Are you
awake
Patti Rabbit?”

Patti Rabbit
pulled
the blanket
over
her long
floppy ears.

“It’s time,”
urgently
whispered
the spider
through
the knothole
window.

“Time
for sleep,”
murmured
Patti Rabbit
back
to her friend.

Webster Spider
checked
the distance
of the rose light.

"Patti Rabbit
the Sun
is sending
the rose
for us.

Don’t you
want to try
and catch it,”
asked
Webster Spider
through
the knothole
window.

Hopping
out of bed
Patti Rabbit
rushed
to the knothole
window,
climbing
partially
out.

Webster Spider
gently
lifted
Patti Rabbit
from the window
onto
his back.

“Hold tight,”
said Webster Spider
as he
began
the climb
to the top
of the oldest
and tallest
oak tree.

Just
above
Rabbit House
is Squirrel House.

Webster Spider
quickly
tiptoed
pass
the knothole door
of 2 Oak Tree,
so not to
disturb
the still
sleeping
squirrel family.

Climbing
as fast
as his eight legs
could carry them,
Webster Spider
rushed
upward.

If they were
to reach
the top
in time
to catch
the Sun’s rose
they would
have to
fly
he realized.

Swinging
on a silk string,
the two passed
Cardinal House,
surprising
the singing
family with
their sudden
appearance
and disappearance.

Patti Rabbit’s ears
flew
behind her,
as she
hugged
tight
to Webster Spider’s
back,
reaching
the top
of the oldest oak tree,
just
in time
to jump
on to
the Sun’s rosey back!

Patti Rabbit
sat
on Webster Spider’s back
and Webster Spider
sat
on the gliding
gigantic pink rose!

Across
the forest roof
they rode.

While color
sparkled
and sprinkled
from the rose stem
upon all
they passed
over.

Before them
Night was neatly
rolling
the stars
and darkness
up for
the Day.

Hoping
to catch
a star
Webster Spider
shot
a silk string
to the closest.

Alas,
the Night sky’s
hold
was stronger
and the star
was
neatly
rolled
up
for the day!

Since the clouds
were really
part
of the world
they remained
untouched
by Night
changing
from hues
of blue by
the Sun’s rose
to hues of pink!

Then quickly,
the clouds were
changed
once more,
by the sparkling,
sprinkling
hues of rainbow.

Across
Milky Valley
the Sun’s rose
flew
with passengers
dropping
pink petals.

Crossing
over
forests
meadows
and fields
over
the Milky River and
surrounding
gardens.

The red section
of Milky Valley
with red
tomatoes
apples and
raspberries
was dusted
with the soft
pink petals
then with
sparkling
sprinkling
rainbow hues
of daylight.

Over
the purple section
of Milky Valley
the Sun’s rose
glided.

Patti Rabbit
pointed
down
to the grapes
and plums
she loved
to nibble.

“Look,
the purple
grapes
and plums
are pink!”

“Not
for long,”
replied
the spider as the
Sun’s rose
drove forward.

“See
they’re sparkling
purple now,”
laughed
Webster Spider.

“I like
the rose
petal dusting
here the most,”
said
Patti Rabbit
to Webster Spider as
the Sun’s rose
dusted
the yellow
section with
pink petals
and sparkling
rainbow colors.

“Look,
the Sun is
rising
on the Sun,”
said
the excited
rabbit
to her
friend
the spider.

The Sun’s rose
brought
color to the
opposite
side
of Milky Valley.

The section
where the Milky River
often flooded,
turning
the dark
chocolate ground
into
the often
visited
and tasted
Milk Chocolate
Marsh.

 “It’s Time
for us
to land
Patti Rabbit!
We’re near
the mountains
on the far side
of our valley,”
reluctantly
said
Webster Spider.

Shooting
a silk
string
to the nearest
night
blue mountain
peak,
the spider
gently
landed
ahead of
the Sun’s rose.

They
called
up
their thanks
and waved
farewell
as the Sun’s rose
passed
over.

The Sun’s rose
answered
by turning
them pinkish
just before
giving
them their very
own share
of sparkling,
sprinkling daylight.
