Welcome to Addiction

Welcome to Addiction

A Poem by Lalli
"

Have you ever noticed how many people are TRULY addicted. whether its caffiene, nicotine, alcohol, medications, and other drugs. Not to mention, thats just ONLY drugs. Well this is my observation, and a bit of fact to help open eyes.

"

It’s a silent killer on a scale that turns cancer into child’s play
Never foreseen
And rarely acknowledged
Drug addiction plagues millions of lives
It enslaves minds through craves that decay brains
Tricking the infected
Quick-fixes become one tracked objectives

So I find myself asking
What influences a person down the path of addiction?
What are the affects?
Why isn’t it caught at an earlier age?
How is it that it remains masked from our diverted eyes?
And what compounds make up this affliction in disguise?

Could it start with lies spewed without chemical proof
Driven by greed with a skeptical view
While doctors diagnose our children with A.D.D.
Hooking them on pills like Ritalin and Concerta,
And I don’t know about you but I’m concerned of the fact that we don’t see this as a problem
As we hand them pills with the synthetic chemical make up similar to the same drugs
We will try to keep them away from.
So here you go son, take these amphetamines but don’t take speed it could kill you!
Maybe we don’t catch the transformation
Because it was us
The role models of our youth who greeted them with a smile and said,

“Welcome to Addiction”

So why are we surprised when they finally become A.D.D.
Adults Dying Defiantly
Slamming rigs with dirty needles
Frying minds with hallucinogens
Killing brain cells amidst a rebellion spawned from hypocrisy
Since we failed to see our error as we made them chemically dependant

And unfortunately Internally Confusing Teens
Mutates a detachment from reality
Making them susceptible to I.C.T
Individuality Consumed Tragically
Since addicts allow drugs to be the master mind at the controls
Without emotions and the ability to reason
The body begins to craves more drugs and is willing to go to any lengths necessary
So maybe that’s why I.C.T, might really mean Irreversible Chemical Transition
Causing brain damage beyond repair as natural mood inducers are no longer produced
Because we consistently introduced a similar substance as a replacement
I see trouble in the distance
As our brain waits for a third party to provide the right dosage with no equalizer
And if they’re not received
Then welcome to the bipolar rollercoaster of withdrawal
Where sanity may be lost and death is a realistic possibility

Invisibly Obstructing Needs
Wants become necessities and priorities are rearranged which leads to an I.O.N mentality
A rationalization used to justify
Because if “I Own Nothing” then what do I have to lose
I already have no family, no friends
So all I need is my drug even if it takes me to my end
And sure enough the end it will take them
Exhausted from fighting their addiction

Sadly this poem has only begun to scratch the surface

Drug Addiction is one of the most common diseases amongst humans
Yet it continues to fly discreetly under radar since less than 10 percent are receiving treatment

Even though it may be incurable
Active steps of managed prevention can be taken
But first it must start with the acknowledgment of their problem
By admitting their conflicted in the war of addiction

A.D.D.I.C.T.I.O.N
Because a tragedy I can’t see, I won’t win

jason, thank you for sharing such insight, reading this magnificent poem speaks to the masses,
and enlightens our hearts in ways that causes thoughts to ponder what it means to know and understand
what the effects of addiction and the effects of modernization has on humanity as a whole,
there is an incredible ammount of information that no less dwells on the subject defining the state
of being and what it takes to stop drug abuse at its root cause and I believe you've hit the
mark squarely in sayin it starts at home, with the parents, I hope others have the opportunity to
read this brilliant work, because it is a real eye opener, and causes the reader to contemplate
the concept in ways that I believe haven't been addressed, a Poet's poet you are, keep it up

Lalli,
I am glad you have written this, and I know addiction first hand. Its a game of mind over matter, and if you allow the drug to win you over or you win over it. People run to it for many reasons, to hide from their stresses or day to day problems. Its easier to be high night and day than to cop with the day to day life. I know I have visited the exprience and know others very close to me who still suffers. Its a very difficult and scary path, and its hard to get off of. All we can do for those people is to pray and offer help. Only if they are willing to accept it because most dont. I really enjoyed this poem. Thank you.
