The First Step

The First Step

I saw you in the desolate plains,
watching us play our sick little games.
Because you won't join, away we will fling you;
your problems surmount the fake drama we cling to.

Your heart isn't broken but still you won't smile.
I saw you sleeping on cold bathroom tile.
Cover it up with cheerful goodbyes,
I already saw that pain in your eyes.

You are much more than scared and alone,
and all that you want is a place to call home.
But no, we can't see it - you're different, a freak,
and no, we don't notice you're starving this week.

But I won't approach you, 'cause I'm not a hero.
I realise we've all been turned into zeroes.
We can't even speak without friends' permission;
I think it's time for an intermission.

It's time for us all to stop feeling numb.
If we turn to help you, the queen bee will come.
If I take the first step, take a risk, let them go,
then maybe true friendship is something I'll know.
