Memorable Dream

Memorable Dream

A Poem by Lee Boyle

This is a dream I had. This is exactly how it happened.

Memorable Dream

There is a dimly lit hall

with leather floors

like the track that circles above

the basketball court at a Y.W.C.A.

The wall is dirt and brick.

I am walking slowly in the hall, bracing myself in passing each room

as if I am in an Alzheimer’s home.

I see a lady with a walker.

She looks as if she had died of old age

but is still alive.

I walk by her, trying not to look.

As I pass, her long, stiff arm unfolds from her,

like a gate

blocking my path.

Her fingers clamp onto my waist.

I see her tired black eyes

creak into a wild, teary stare.

I turn quickly to see what she sees,

a devil

who glares and runs toward us

with echoing tramples that dent the floor

and deep roars that rub my heart.
