Studio at Midnight

Studio at Midnight

A Poem by Leix

In 1970 I had a studio
on Wabash avenue in the Loop
third floor up on 'el' train level
Rose's Records right next door

I was crazy then
painted big things that didn't matter
to satisfy Art Institute advisors
I used day-glo paints and
risked a life of lung time neon care

At night when rain would mist the city
I'd turn out lights
watch the movement on the streets
dolls and hookers, debutants
salesman, sailors, small time cons

beggars, cooks and stand up comics,

Chicago doesn't sleep

Trains would clatter, screech, grind by
vacant yellow windows, a blur of empty faces
I'd wave anyway

watch my fingers glowing in the dark

Terrific, especially the last line. Even in your private moments you were observing....little did you know that this poem would emerge. Nothing is a coincidence.

I was in the world of advertising before I was ca;;ed to teach. It was my destiny. Now I turn a corner, I'm at a bend in the path and I find that writing is calling me. Destiny is knocking again.
