        She got here on a wing and a prayer.  Nine months earlier her life was up for grabs.  In the back room of a notorious w***e house on Anna Street, on a sunny day in March, her mother got a change of heart and got up off the table from under the abortionist’s knife.  Nestled deep within her mother’s womb, the life journey began for Deanna “Dee-Dee” Combs.  When she arrived on New Years’ day 1958, her mother realized that this dark-skinned, curly haired baby would certainly not fit into her “high-brow,” “high-yella” family tree.  Surely Adeline Holmsdale of the Montclair Holmsdales should have known better than to have such a dark-skinned child, but there was nothing to do about it now but deal with it.   As she looked over her cherubim faced baby, she decided, however, that “she’s a pretty little black gal” and committed to dealing with this turn of fate.

"She got here on a wing and a prayer. Nine months earlier her life was up for grabs." I loved this opening. From this chapter you could tell that the protagonist is going to go through hard times based on not just the persception of her family and also that of the society she lives in. I'd love to see more of the story. I'll search for it on amazon.
